"Delivery to the unknown"

"Delivery to the unknown"

Bigger resolution on this one than usual. Hopefully all the hours spent and the detail work was worth it - it's definitely one of the backgrounds I've taken the furthest lately. Enjoy!

Quick sketches

A little more quick sketches made during last week. First one's one of my friend's characters, a Norn female Mesmer (Guild Wars 2 beta). Second one's a rhino cartoon made from a referencepicture. Enjoy :)

Biped project - Sculpting in Mudbox

Status on Biped-project: Soon coming to an end! We're currently learning a bit of Mudbox and working with displacement, bump and texture maps in general - and after UV'ing some of my character's clothes, I finally got around to play with making some organic folds in Mudbox. I must honestly say, that making these organic folds feels much more natural to me, than cutting into your edgeflow in Maya and re-topologize everything, in order to "build" in the folds manually.

So first evening of clothes-sculpting:

The finished model and a turnaround from Mudbox should be ready sometime early next week - stay tuned :)

Small studies

Sleeping - 1 1/2 hour study

Two small quickie-studies today. Played around with the mixer brush tool on the bear - was interesting to see how this tool could give the picture a "wet" feel, in the areas I wanted.

Goache playaround

Played a bit around with goache-tubes this evening. The first one kinda turned into a mess - I didn't manage to keep it simple, but it was fun nonetheless! I used the leftover-paint on the palette from the first one, to paint the last two pictures.

Biped project - Post-apocalyptic Scout

Biped-project

First stage : 6 days of Character Design.
Character description:
My character's set in a sci-fi post-apocalyptic setting - a ravaged dusty and polluted future, with vicious creatures lurking around. She's among the few survivors, having the role of scouting - and therefore her equipment includes a steampunk-inspired handheld telescope, a computer/zoom device covering her one eye, aswell as a gun for protection. Her general design is inspired by arabic and middle-eastern women and their clothing, mixed with the steampunk to get some sci-fi feel across.

Maquette making (4 days)

Next up: 3 weeks of 3d Maya-modelling and some sculpting.

Background thumbs

Small background studies - something I've started to like doing lately - aswell as small thumbnails in my sketchbook with watercolor. Will post those some other day.
First 4 here are from reference-pictures. Last two from imagination.

Sketchbook February 2012

Some little sketchbook update with various things. Animal-drawings from movie, creaturesketch from imagination and some experimental watercolour-stuff. I recently heard in a movie about the company ArenaNet (creating the upcoming game Guild Wars 2, which looks to be amazing), that they specifically assign time in their workday (around 20%), to just test out crazy ideas that's almost doomed to fail. I thought that was kinda cool. Maybe you once in a while come across something interesting and amazing when experimenting in new directions!

Colorweek thumbnailing

A great week of color-theory and practical experimenting with acrylic paint is over!
First off, we were to copy an existing painting (the first one I picked was one of Sargent, an artist I've recently come to like, he's truly amazing). The other two on the first picture was black/white pictures where we were to decide the color and light setting (time of the day) aswell as local color and the color of the light.

Next ones down was my own idea - we were to thumbnail down ideas for the theme "Space Knight", and play around with various light settings and color-contrasts. I finally settled upon a morning setting with orange/peachy colored clouds, as seen on the picture number 3. Finally, nr 4 was another "Space Knights" idea with foreground-characters watching an epic invasion-battle with laser-explosionorama-scenario.

Completed goache-piece

So, the first completed piece done with goache-watercolors - and I really had a blast doing it! It was so challenging and complex, at the same so fun to play around with - I really felt like making this piece was developing and giving for me.

Several things was challenging during the proces: First of all, matching this warm to cool color-transition, it quickly goes from white->orangy-reddish-purplish-blueish, someplaces in a very little area. Connected to this is to controlling not only the color transitions, but the edge transitions - some places having sharp castshadows with orangeish glow at the very edge - other places just soft shadows.

Another thing was keeping in mind the tone of the paper. Since I went with this blue, slight purplish-hued paper, everything I painted of the bodycolor would be somewhat transparent, requiring several layers. So when I'd pick a white with just a little bit of water mixed into it, I'd get this pale white-blueish, which was not what I wanted. Next time I might aswell just paint out some solid base-color underneath it all, and hope that when it dries, it won't interfere and blend with paint putted ontop. I'll have to play around with that some time.

Anyways, reference picture is here:

And as you notice, there's these very clear cast shadows on her skin from the windows - and painting these in a convincing manner making them look natural, gosh that's a bitch. Also, I should probably consider adding in the lightsource (window) in the picture, so we understand where this light is coming from?

Selfportrait digital - december 2011

Recently found a lovely oil-painting by David Palumbo on Gorilla Artfare, and decided it was time for me  to test out some digital selfportrait-painting out again. Im really fascinated by the painting strokes he achieves, and the sense of plane-shifting you can sense in the face.

So, my inspiration source here

My painting proces (roughly 3-4 hours):
